C chromatic layout

Chromatic Harmonica Note Chart in C

Most beginner chromatic harmonica methods assume a C instrument. This page explains the layout in note names instead of tabs alone.

Natural notes without the slide

In C, the no-slide notes already cover the C major scale. Blow notes are C, E, G, and C. Draw notes fill in D, F, A, and B.

Hole 5 blow: C5Hole 5 draw: D5Hole 6 blow: E5Hole 6 draw: F5

Accidentals with the slide

Pressing the slide supplies the chromatic notes between the natural notes: C#, D#, F#, G#, and A#. These are the same pitches as Db, Eb, Gb, Ab, and Bb.

Why C is still useful after you change keys

Even when you play in G, F, Bb, or another key, the physical layout is still the C instrument layout. Learning the C map gives every scale a fixed address.

FAQ

Are C# and Db the same hole?

They are the same pitch on the instrument. The written name depends on the key or musical context.

Do I need a different chart for every key?

No. You need one physical note chart for your instrument, then scale patterns for each musical key.

What does Solo tuning mean?

Solo tuning is the repeated C-E-G-C blow and D-F-A-B draw pattern used by many chromatic harmonicas.
