Chromatic Harmonica Slide Button Notes

The slide button is what makes a chromatic harmonica fully chromatic. Press it in, and the current note rises by one semitone.

Visualize slide notes

Slide in means one semitone higher

If the no-slide note is C, the slide note is C#. If the no-slide note is F, the slide note is F#. In flat keys, those same pitches may be written as Db or Gb.

Do not squeeze the slide

Many beginners press the button too hard and disturb the air stream. Keep the button motion light and let the breath stay steady.

Practice pairs

Play a natural note, then the slide note, then return to the natural note. Keep the pitch change clean without changing breath pressure.

C - C# - CD - D# - DF - F# - FG - G# - GA - A# - A

FAQ

Is the slide only for sharps?

Physically it raises the pitch. Musically, the raised pitch can be written as a sharp or an enharmonic flat.

Can the microphone detect whether I used the slide?

A microphone detects pitch, not the button. The visualizer maps the pitch to the most useful default position.

Should I hold the slide before or after breathing?

For clean attacks, set the slide position before starting the note, then keep the airflow steady.
