Tab reading

How to Read Chromatic Harmonica Tabs

Chromatic harmonica tabs become easier when you separate four ideas: hole number, breath direction, slide position, and pitch name.

Open the tabs guide

Hole number

The hole number tells you where to place your mouth. On a 12-hole chromatic, beginners usually start around holes 5-8.

Breath direction

Every tab needs blow or draw. If a tab only says 5, you still need to know whether that means 5 blow or 5 draw.

Slide position

Slide out means the normal button position. Slide in means press the button while playing that blow or draw note.

5 blow = C55 draw = D55 slide blow = C#55 slide draw = D#5

FAQ

What does plus mean in harmonica tabs?

Some tab systems use plus for blow, minus for draw, or special symbols for slide. This site writes the words directly to avoid ambiguity.

Can the same note have two tab positions?

Yes. Duplicate notes happen on chromatic harmonica, especially around octave boundaries.

Do tabs include rhythm?

Some do, but many simple tabs do not. Use the original melody or a metronome to keep rhythm honest.
